With the modern age comes along the dilemma of losing weight. There are a multitude of causes on why one ends up fat, overweight or even obese and some of which are briefly discussed below. 1. Balance This is about balancing your energy. You get energy from the calories contained in the food you eat. In order for one to maintain a healthy weight the energy taken in should be equal to the energy being used up. When does weight gain take place? It takes place when stored energy is greater compared to used energy. As for weight loss, this happens when there is more energy used in relation to energy being kept. 2. Sedentary Lifestyle Energy tends to be stored when one doesn't have the time to perform physical activities like walking, jogging or aerobic exercises. In addition to this, with the modern conveniences in this day and age there is less demand for physical work at home or at the work place. Take into consideration the situation at the office where people take the elevator instead of the stairs to go from one floor to the other. Also, in spending too much time in front of the television or the computer no energy is being used as you simply sit down while clicking the remote or the mouse. 3. Location In an area where there are no sports facilities available for recreational activities then it won't be a shock to find the people residing there to be overweight or obese. The lack of the above mentioned areas makes it hard for residents to be physically active. In addition, the booming business of fast food chains sprouting just about anywhere, offering large food portions also contribute to the problem. The food from these places is laden with calories and since large portions are served the caloric content is even higher. 4. Genetics Studies have shown that people who come from families whose members are overweight and obese tend to be overweight themselves or have a greater chance of becoming one. The genes play a role on how your body processes fat, the amount it will store and the amount it will use. If more fat is stored, weight gain is staring straight at you. 5. Hormonal Problems There are times when problems regarding hormones can cause weight gain. Some medical conditions are said to be the cause on why some people are overweight. An example of such a condition is hypothyroidism. The thyroid here is under active so there is a short supply of the thyroid hormone. This causes the slow down of the body's metabolism and eventually results to the individual gaining weight. Women with PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome tend to be obese as well. This is due to the high levels of the hormone androgen in their body. 6. Sleeping less than normal A person who lacks sleep tends to eat more as compared to a person who sleeps 7-8 hours at night. Also, people who lack sleep prefer food that contains lots of carbohydrates and calories. In short, they go for food that can give them energy for the day. The more this person continues to lack sleep, the more he'll crave for energy boosting foods which will eventually lead to over eating and gaining weight. Understanding the causes of weight gain or being overweight may help you to successfully reduce weight. What better way to solve a problem than by knowing the root of the problem first. If you are able to figure out what is really causing your body to gain weight, you will then be able to take a necessary plan of action on how to deal with it. |
